A film about Alexander Bergmann and Steven Springfield - two Jewish men who survived the Holocaust. Both grew up in Riga/ Latvia, survived the Riga ghetto as young men (aged 16 and 18) and also endured the Kaiserwald and Stutthof concentration camps. They met during their time in the ghetto, as they were forced to work in the same work detail under the auspices of Befehlshaber der Ordnungspolizei Ostland - BDO. After their liberation, their ways parted, as Steven Springfield emigrated to the USA and Alexander Bergmann returned to Riga.
Alexander Bergmann married early, started a family and studied Law.
He still works in Riga as a lawyer today.
Steven Springfield arrived in the USA without a dime in 1947. After initial support from Jewish aid organisations, he managed to establish his own business for linen and curtains in the early fifties. He later
opened two further stores.
Bergmann and Springfield had no contact with each other during this time. Only after five decades did their paths cross again:
Today, both lead their survivor associations - as their Presidents. They are in regular contact with each other and have become friends again. Thus, the film also tells the story of a friendship between two men.
